Chapter 6

Avery’s entire being vibrated with nervous energy. At the seriousness in Jasper’s eyes. The heaviness in his tone.

He tossed their greasy napkins into the white bag, crumpled the bag into a tight ball, then tucked it down into a corner of their brown handled shopping bag that rested at the base of the bench.

Licking the last of the salty spice of the chicken from her lower lip, she blinked.

“You are?” she asked. His statement echoed through her mind: I’m about to take another. Another chance. With her?

“Yep.” He took her hands in his, then tugged her up.

Leaving the shopping bag at the base of the bench, he kept hold of one of her hands, leading them further down the beautiful nature path.

A thrilling frisson of heat sizzled through her, that they held hands. And the soft rubbing of his thumb over her skin on the back of her hand felt… right. Intimate. Erotic. Unsettling, a bit. And yet, paradoxically soothing.

And the entire world, in his very best favorite place, seemed to join them, parallel them. Bursting with splendid individuality. Yet wholly in harmony.

Dappled shimmers of low sunlight glimmered onto the earthen trail.

The sweet fragrance of springtime teased through pungent forest decay.

Songbirds warbled happy melodies, flitting through fluffy green branches overhead. While swooping wrens screeched at a raven flying to close to a nest.

Farther ahead billowed the mushrooming top of a massive tree with a gnarled trunk and fat exposed roots at its base. Only instead of leaves, its canopy exploded in a snowy cloud of pure white blossoms. Industrious bees buzzed with a low hum, bobbing the fat flowers randomly down and up with their landings and takeoffs.

When Jasper tugged her beneath the tree, a dreamy sweet fragrance enveloped them.

Those dark eyes stared down into hers, searching as he sucked in a deep breath. Then he drew her into his arms, dipping his head down.

Her pulse quickened, excitement thrumming through her.

And as her eyes drifted closed, his lips brushed against hers.

Gentle at first.

Tentative.

Then she wrapped her arms around him, holding tight, as the whole world began to reel.

Jasper’s intoxicating scent filled her next inhale, earthy and spiced.

The most incredible first kiss of her life unfurled between them. Warm breath feathering over her face. Slight whiskers scratching her chin. Soothing kisses starting in softer sips, strengthening into firmer sucks.

When her lips parted on a sigh, he opened his mouth, deepening their kiss.

And his decadent flavor infused through her, salty with a taste of sweet.

A frisson of aching heat spiraled through her, sparking and sizzling into her heated intimate places.

Under that fragrant blooming tree, long amazing seconds dragged into blissful eternity.

Until Jasper began to slow their kiss, gentle his touch, cool down the heat.

Seconds later, he pulled away. He took a step backward, clasped both of her hands in his, and stared down at her.

Then he sighed heavily. “Okay. Here goes…”

That wasn’t it?

The weight of an even heavier moment charged through the air.

She arched a brow. “Uh… should I be sitting
